Getting to know… John Skoljarev, Tuna Fisherman

Tuna fisherman, John Skoljarev has always loved living in Port Stephens.

“You don’t need to go anywhere else on holidays, Port Stephens has some of the best beaches, the climate is perfect – not too hot or not too cold – you really couldn’t pick a better place as far as I’m concerned,” John says.

Joining the family fishing business 20 years ago, John and his crew are the only tuna fishing boat in the Port Stephens area and catch mostly Yellow Fin, Big Eye and Albacore tuna.

Tuna fishing in Port Stephens is unique in that John can fish close to the shelf, avoiding the need for long trips, ensuring the fish are fresher and of better quality than elsewhere along the coast.

This freshness and quality of fish is extremely important to John’s business as he exports the tuna to Japan and the United States as well as selling it in Newcastle, Sydney and Melbourne.

“Being able to fish so close to the shelf, coupled with the clean, clear water, means that we are able to fish all year round and sell Port Stephens’ tuna across the globe,” John explains. “I’ve always been on the water and in a boat, it’s a great lifestyle.”

When he’s not working, John is still on the water, fishing recreationally with his son or body boarding at the beach.
