Getting to know… Miro Mislov, Fisherman
Miro Mislov loves to be his own boss, he loves being on the ocean, he loves the thrill and challenge of the chase and of course he loves providing fresh quality seafood to the people of Port Stephens.
Fishing has been in the blood of the Mislov man since the 1960s with Miro’s grandfather, father, uncles and brother all a part of the family run business. The family fishes offshore along the coast from Forster to Newcastle, with the main catches being calamari, whiting and flathead.
“It’s almost like a tradition in my family,” Miro explains. “I’ve always gone fishing with dad, I love the freedom to do what I like and being on a boat.”
Although Miro did spend a few years as an accountant in Sydney, the 9 to 5 lifestyle was just not for him. “From December to July we fish at night. We’re out on the water for around 12 hours and ensure the fish is back fresh, on ice and into the Co Op and local shops and restaurants the next morning,” he says.
Miro is a firm believer that Port Stephens seafood is special because of the ability to catch the fish and provide it straight to the market.
“We don’t do the long trawls, we like the short trips because we can get the fish into the Co Op fresh from the ocean,” Miro says. “ That’s what makes Port Stephens seafood so special, it is the fact that we can provide it fresh everyday, it’s caught and unloaded every single day, and it means we are back home everyday too.”
As a fisherman of 20 years, Miro admits he has tasted a lot of seafood in his time, however he still can’t go past good quality Port Stephens caught calamari. Here are some top tipson how to choose the best calamari at the co-op.
