Getting to know… Bob Monin, Nelson Bay Fish Market
From eight years of age Bob Monin would venture out to sea, joining his dad on an adventure to catch seafood for local shops and restaurants around the Port Stephens area as well as the Newcastle Co Op.
But it wasn’t always smooth sailing for Bob, “when I first went to sea, I was sick everyday. However I soon developed a great love for the ocean and selling seafood,” Bob explains. “My family has been fishing for over 60 years, my dad was a fisherman here when he was a boy, and so was my great grandfather.”
Although admitting that he did try his hand at accounting for a few years, at the age of 28 Bob couldn’t shake the burning desire to just go fishing. So, following his dream Bob “packed up and sold out” his accounting business, went fishing with his dad, and has been involved with the industry ever since.
Bob and his wife along with a few staff run The Nelson Bay Fish Market; catching, preparing and selling seafood in the local area.
According to Bob, Port Stephens has some of the best seafood around.
“The quality of seafood is pretty fantastic in our area because the water is so pristine and clear. There’s a great demand locally for seafood from Port Stephens and for about nine months of the year I fish primarily for lobsters,” Bob says.
Lobsters are among the most popular items sold at The Nelson Bay Fish Market with fillets of fish, prawns and oysters also in demand. Bob himself can’t go past a nice piece fresh fish, and Australia Blue eye, flat head or even a brim if he catches one; in his own words “I just love fish!”
